Power flushing for cold radiators and sludged-up heating systems
If radiators are cold at the bottom, heating up unevenly across the house, or the system's making noise it never used to, the cause is usually sludge and debris built up inside the pipework and radiators over years. A power flush forces that out. We work on the wet side of the heating system only — radiators, valves and pipework — and we don't touch gas or boilers at all.
Signs your heating system needs a flush
A flush is usually the right call when you're seeing several of these at once, rather than just one radiator playing up:
- Several radiators cold at the bottom while the top stays hot
- Radiators that heat unevenly across the house — some fine, some barely warm
- The heating takes noticeably longer to warm the house than it used to
- Black or discoloured water when a radiator is bled or drained
- Banging, gurgling or knocking noises from the pipework when the heating's on
- The boiler cycling on and off more than it used to, or running noisily
- A radiator recently replaced that's already showing the same cold-spot pattern

How a power flush works
A proper flush is more thorough than the bottle of cleaner some people try first — it circulates cleaning fluid and water through the whole system under controlled flow to physically shift the sludge.

Assess the system first
We check how many radiators are affected, the age and layout of the system, and whether a full flush is actually needed or if the problem is isolated to one or two radiators, which can sometimes be dealt with individually instead. - 02
Connect the flushing machine
The power flushing unit is connected into the heating circuit, bypassing the boiler itself since we don't work on that part of the system — the flush addresses the radiators and pipework the boiler feeds into. - 03
Circulate and dislodge the sludge
Cleaning chemical and water are circulated through each radiator in turn, reversing flow where needed to break up settled sludge and corrosion debris that's built up at the bottom of radiators and in narrow pipe sections. - 04
Flush through to clean water
The dirty water and dislodged debris are flushed out and replaced repeatedly until what's coming through runs clean, rather than stopping after a single pass. - 05
Refill with inhibitor and check performance
The system is refilled with fresh water and a corrosion inhibitor to slow sludge building up again, and we check radiators heat evenly across the whole house before finishing.
What a flush can and can't fix
A power flush deals with sludge, rust and debris inside the radiators and pipework — it's genuinely effective at clearing the cold-spot, uneven-heating problem that comes from years without any inhibitor or maintenance, which is common in older systems across Oldham and Manchester that have never had one done.
It won't fix a boiler fault, a failing pump, or a system that's losing pressure because of a leak — those need addressing separately, and if the underlying issue traces back to the boiler, that's Gas Safe territory and outside what we do. We'll tell you plainly if that's what we're seeing rather than push ahead with a flush that won't solve it.
For most domestic systems, a flush every several years alongside inhibitor top-ups keeps radiators performing well and reduces how often you need individual radiators repaired or replaced. If you're already planning to replace a radiator or two, it's often worth having the whole system flushed at the same time rather than fitting new radiators onto water that's still full of old sludge.

Power Flushing — common questions
Do you flush the boiler as well as the radiators?
No. We work on the radiators, valves and pipework — the wet heating circuit — and don't touch the boiler itself. If the boiler needs attention as part of a full system service, that's work for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
How long does a power flush take?
It depends on the number of radiators and how much sludge has built up, but it's typically most of a day for an average house. We'll give you a realistic estimate once we've seen the system.
Will a flush fix a radiator that's cold at the top instead of the bottom?
Cold at the top is usually trapped air rather than sludge, and bleeding the radiator often solves it on its own. Cold at the bottom is the pattern that points to sludge and a flush.
Is a chemical flush the same as a power flush?
A chemical cleaner circulated by the normal pump is milder and works for light build-up. A power flush uses a dedicated machine to force higher flow and reverse direction through each radiator, which shifts heavier sludge that chemical alone won't.
