Blocked or overflowing external drains — Oldham & Manchester
An external drain that's overflowing, gurgling or smelling bad is usually more urgent than it looks — everything inside the property is trying to drain through that same run. I clear and inspect external drains, gullies and manholes across Oldham and Manchester, and if the chamber is on your side of the boundary I'll get it moving again the same visit wherever possible.
Signs of an external drainage problem
These usually show up outside long before anything backs up indoors, if you know what to look for:
- Water pooling around a gully or manhole cover after normal use, not just heavy rain
- A drain smell lingering in the garden or at the side of the house
- A manhole cover that's slightly raised or won't sit flush anymore
- Grass or paving sinking slightly near a drain run
- Foul water visible in an inspection chamber that should be running clear
- Toilets or sinks throughout the house all draining slower at the same time
- A gully outside the kitchen that fills and empties slowly instead of draining straight away

How I clear and check external drains
External work means understanding the whole run from the house to the point it leaves your boundary, not just the nearest chamber.

Lift the nearest chamber
I start at the manhole or inspection chamber closest to the problem and check the flow and the water level, which tells me straight away whether the blockage is upstream, downstream, or right there. - 02
Rod or jet through to clear it
Depending on what's causing it — silt, roots, wipes, fat, or a collapsed joint — I'll rod it through by hand or bring in the jetting equipment for a heavier or repeat blockage. - 03
Check adjoining chambers
Once flow is restored at one point, I check the chamber before and after it to confirm the whole run is clear, not just the section closest to where the problem showed itself. - 04
Identify the boundary
Where a run crosses into a shared lateral drain or a public sewer, I'll identify roughly where your responsibility ends, since anything beyond the boundary is generally United Utilities' to sort. - 05
Flag structural issues honestly
If a chamber shows signs of a cracked pipe, a collapsed section or roots that will be back within months, I'll tell you plainly rather than just clearing the immediate blockage and leaving it at that.
Roots, silt and older drainage systems
A lot of the terraced and semi-detached housing across Oldham, Rochdale and the surrounding areas still has original clay drainage with rigid joints rather than modern flexible pipe. Those joints are exactly where tree and shrub roots find their way in, and once inside, roots trap silt and debris that would otherwise wash straight through.
External gullies, particularly outside kitchens, are also prone to silting up on their own — food debris and grease settle in the trap at the bottom of the gully rather than washing all the way through, and it builds up gradually enough that nobody notices until it overflows in heavy rain.
Where a chamber shows a persistent problem rather than a one-off, a CCTV drain survey is often the sensible next step before spending money clearing the same blockage repeatedly — it shows exactly where roots or damage sit along the run, and I'll say so if that looks like the right route rather than guessing.

How do I know if a drain blockage is my responsibility?
Anything within your property boundary is generally yours. Shared lateral drains serving more than one property, and the public sewer beyond your boundary, are usually United Utilities' responsibility. I'll tell you where that line sits once I've had a look at the chambers.
Do you deal with shared drains between neighbouring properties?
Yes, up to the point they become a shared lateral or leave your combined boundary — beyond that, it's a matter for United Utilities and I'll point you toward them if that's what the chamber shows.
Will you need to dig up my garden or driveway?
Not usually for a straightforward blockage — most external drain clearance is done through existing manhole and chamber covers. Excavation is only needed for a genuinely collapsed or badly displaced pipe, and I'd always discuss that before it comes to digging anything up.
Can heavy rain cause an external drain to overflow even if it's not blocked?
It can, particularly if the drain is already partly restricted or if surface water is being forced into a combined system beyond capacity — but persistent overflowing in normal weather usually does point to a genuine blockage or damage worth checking.
