Check the existing supply and drainage arrangement
Most dishwashers tee off the cold supply near the sink and drain either into the sink waste trap or a dedicated standpipe. I check what's there and whether it's actually done correctly, not just working by luck. - 02
Fit or replace the isolation valve
A proper valve at the supply point means the dishwasher can be isolated without shutting off the kitchen sink too — a lot of older installs are missing this entirely. - 03
Connect supply and waste hoses correctly
New washers on the supply connection, the waste hose looped and clipped at the right height to stop siphoning back into the machine, and everything routed so it isn't kinked or resting where it can chafe. - 04
Level and secure the machine
A dishwasher that isn't level won't drain properly and can put strain on the door seal over time — feet are adjusted properly rather than left as they came out of the box. - 05
Run a full cycle test
I run the machine through a wash and check every connection and the floor of the cabinet before leaving, so a small drip doesn't turn into swollen chipboard weeks later.
Fitting into an island unit or new position
Dishwashers going into an island or a position away from the sink need a new supply run and a waste connection to a nearby stack or gully, which is more involved than a straight swap next to the sink. It's worth having this looked at before the kitchen units go in, if you're planning ahead, rather than trying to retrofit pipework through finished cabinetry.
A recurring issue in older kitchens is a dishwasher spliced onto the cold feed with no isolation valve and a waste hose just pushed into the sink's outlet without a proper connector — it might not leak for years, then it does, usually while nobody's home. Adding a proper valve and connector while the machine is out is a small job worth doing.
Integrated dishwashers behind a cabinet door bring an extra step — door alignment and hinge adjustment — but the plumbing underneath needs to be right first, otherwise the door will never sit square for long.

Yes — most delivery services will leave a machine in place without connecting it properly, or won't touch the plumbing at all. I connect the supply, waste and check the levelling.
Why is there water under my dishwasher after every wash?
