Dishwasher plumbing & installation — Oldham & Manchester

Dishwashers cause a disproportionate number of under-sink leaks for such a small appliance, usually because the waste connection was never sealed properly or the machine wasn't levelled. I plumb in new dishwashers and fix existing connections across Oldham and the surrounding area.

The symptoms

What usually brings this call in

The most common reasons people call about a dishwasher:

  • A new dishwasher needs connecting to the water supply and waste
  • Water is appearing under the cabinet after a wash cycle
  • The old machine is being swapped and the connections don't match
  • The waste hose keeps working loose or was never clipped properly
  • There's no isolation valve, just a spliced connection under the sink
  • The dishwasher is going into a new position, such as an island unit
  • A slow drip at the inlet valve has been getting worse

Step by step

How I install or fix it

The details under the sink matter more than people expect.

  1. 01

Check the existing supply and drainage arrangement

Most dishwashers tee off the cold supply near the sink and drain either into the sink waste trap or a dedicated standpipe. I check what's there and whether it's actually done correctly, not just working by luck.
  2. 02

Fit or replace the isolation valve

A proper valve at the supply point means the dishwasher can be isolated without shutting off the kitchen sink too — a lot of older installs are missing this entirely.
  3. 03

Connect supply and waste hoses correctly

New washers on the supply connection, the waste hose looped and clipped at the right height to stop siphoning back into the machine, and everything routed so it isn't kinked or resting where it can chafe.
  4. 04

    Level and secure the machine

A dishwasher that isn't level won't drain properly and can put strain on the door seal over time — feet are adjusted properly rather than left as they came out of the box.
  5. 05

    Run a full cycle test

I run the machine through a wash and check every connection and the floor of the cabinet before leaving, so a small drip doesn't turn into swollen chipboard weeks later.
Worth knowing

Fitting into an island unit or new position

Dishwashers going into an island or a position away from the sink need a new supply run and a waste connection to a nearby stack or gully, which is more involved than a straight swap next to the sink. It's worth having this looked at before the kitchen units go in, if you're planning ahead, rather than trying to retrofit pipework through finished cabinetry.

A recurring issue in older kitchens is a dishwasher spliced onto the cold feed with no isolation valve and a waste hose just pushed into the sink's outlet without a proper connector — it might not leak for years, then it does, usually while nobody's home. Adding a proper valve and connector while the machine is out is a small job worth doing.

Integrated dishwashers behind a cabinet door bring an extra step — door alignment and hinge adjustment — but the plumbing underneath needs to be right first, otherwise the door will never sit square for long.

Urgency

Is this an emergency, or can it be booked in?

Both are fine — but it helps us prioritise if you know which one you're describing.

  • What the problem is

In your own words — where the water is coming from and how long it's been going on.

Questions

Dishwasher Installation — common questions

Can you install a dishwasher delivered by a retailer?

Yes — most delivery services will leave a machine in place without connecting it properly, or won't touch the plumbing at all. I connect the supply, waste and check the levelling.

Why is there water under my dishwasher after every wash?

Usually a loose waste hose connection, a failed door seal, or the machine sitting slightly out of level so it doesn't drain fully. Worth having it checked before the cabinet floor takes damage.

Can a dishwasher and washing machine share the same supply point?

Often yes, with the right tee fitting and separate isolation valves for each, so one can be worked on without disturbing the other.

Do you fit integrated dishwashers behind cabinet doors?

Yes — the plumbing connection is the same, with the added step of setting up the door fixing brackets so everything sits square.

What's the cost for installation?
